Crochet is a craft I never thought I’d get in to. I’ve always been a creative person – music being my main creative outlet since high school. I was never really good at art, or at making things with my hands.

I’ve tried to knit scarves over the years, with increasingly less success. I tried to crochet once, but the concept of ‘the chain’ just didn’t make sense. I discovered new ways of creating – lettering and calligraphy, painting, picked up new musical instruments – but nothing ever really grabbed me.

Then Lockdown Happened.

I went to our local hobby store, picked up some yarn and needles, and set about knitting a scarf for a friend. Another friend loved the yarn, and asked if I could knit a beanie…

My Mom suggested I crochet it instead. It would be much easier, she said, and she still had her hooks from years ago.

The chain still confused me. And how can you make something circular from something straight?!

The main difference between my previous attempt at crochet and this year – YouTube tutorials. I’m sure they were around when I tried all those years ago – but I now own a Smart TV where I have high-definition YouTube at my fingertips! And this is where I discovered the thing that would change my creative journey – The Magic Circle.

There was something about this concept – the idea of creating your stitches directly, instead of making a chain to then stitch into, which just made sense to me. Everything clicked! I’ve rarely been without a crochet hook since… And my yarn collection has reached a point one may call obsessive….

I have since gone back to the dreaded chain, and can now confidently say I’ve mastered it. In fact, at the time of writing, my current project is a shawl for a dear friend, which began with a chain of 197 stitches!

I’m the kind of person where creating something needs to have a purpose. I struggle to bust out 10 plushies to sell at the market, or on this site. It needs to be for someone! How else am I supposed to know how big, or how long, or what colour? Pictured below are some of the items I’ve crafted over the last 4 years. Beanies, scarves, slippers, plushies, keychains, fidget toys – I’ll give anything a go!
